Winter Fun in the Grand Tetons: Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Snowmobiling
Unlike Yellowstone National Park - most of which is closed to the public during the winter - you can enjoy the excitement of cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in the Grand Tetons. In fact, the number of Nordic and snowmobile trails makes it easy to come back to the park in the winter again and again.
Some of the more popular ski and snowshoe trails in Grand Teton National Park are Flagg Canyon, Phelps Lake Overlook, Jenny Lake, and Silver Mountain. Some take you on epic journeys through pine forests on mountain ridges; others provide leisurely jaunts through riverside meadows. The terrain ranges from paths in and around gently rolling hills, trails over volcanic rock through deep canyon walls, and short, steep ascents and descents that will leave you breathless.
Snowmobilers can access and enjoy two trails within the borders of the park: the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail (CDST) and the Grassy Lake Road. The CDST is a renowned journey that extends for 270 miles through Wyoming. It’s consistently ranked in the top 5 trails in Snowest Magazine, which picks the cream of the crop from 12 western states. Grassy Lake Road is a fun little jaunt that provides access into Targhee National Forest.
So don’t make the mistake of writing off the Grand Tetons during the winter months. November, December, January, and February are great months to book a condo with Mountain Property Management and enjoy the amenities and attractions of both the rental and the town of Jackson itself. There are numerous activities in which to partake – and, of course, the same spectacular scenery and stunning views can be enjoyed year-round. Please remember that hypothermia and avalanches are real threats in the winter season. Take any and all precautions to keep everyone in your party warm and safe.
